Survivor Eye of the Tiger (from Rocky III)
Trembol | Story behind the best Rock song, Eye of the Tiger
It was 1982 when Survivor, an American rock band, released the single ‘Eye of the Tiger‘ as a commission from Sly (Sylvester Stallone) for the third part of the Rocky saga.
The years have gone by, over 40 to be precise, and it is still the most motivational song I have ever heard, as well as being a pop culture icon and the most used song in gyms, as we tell you below.
🐅 How did Eye of the Tiger come about? Stallone wanted a song for Rocky III that would connect with young people. He thought a new, unreleased song would be best. Also contributing to the decision was that he was denied the rights to use the song he had originally chosen, Queen’s ‘Another One Bites The Dust‘.
He had heard some songs by the band Survivor and loved them, so he called them up and commissioned them to do a song. The band’s songwriters, guitarist Frankie Sullivan and keyboardist Jim Peterik, asked him to watch the film for inspiration. With some reluctance, in case it leaked, Stallone sent it to them.
What almost nobody knows is that ‘The Eye of the Tiger‘ was not the first song that Survivor composed for Rocky III, but the second, because Sylvester didn’t like the first composition, a ballad called ‘Ever Since The World Began‘.
Peterik and Sullivan started composing the legendary guitar riff which, if you notice, goes to the rhythm of Rocky’s punches in the film.
In 1 day, they had almost finished the song. When Stallone heard it, he liked it a lot, although he suggested that the drums should be louder and that they should add a 4th verse. Survivor did it, they recorded a demo and the work was finished. They had created a smash hit.
🐅 What does Eye of the Tiger mean? The eye of the tiger is a metaphor for the inner struggle of each person. In the film Rocky was getting rich, he lost interest in competing and Apollo Creed, his greatest competitor and friend, told him that he had to regain the ‘Eye of the Tiger’.
The song conveys that feeling of never stop fighting!
Survivor explains the reason for the name Eye of the Tiger
Al principio pensamos que llamarlo ‘Eye of the Tiger’ era demasiado obvio. Todo se relacionaba con la supervivencia, por eso la íbamos a llamar ‘Survival’.
Al final del día, nos dijimos ¿Estamos locos? Ese título es tan fuerte, y le pusimos ‘Eye of the Tiger’.
At first, we wondered if calling it ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ was too obvious and we were going to call the song ‘Survival’.
At the end of the day, we said, ‘Are we nuts?’ That hook is so strong, and went with ‘Eye Of The Tiger.’

Survivor Poor Man’s Son
Their story begins in Chicago in the late 1970s. Jim Peterik was the lead singer and guitarist of a band called The Ides of March.
The band was invited to play a concert in Minnesota. It was 1974 and Jim couldn’t go for personal reasons. It turned out that the plane they were travelling in crashed, killing most of his band 🛬
From that moment on, Peterik was known as ‘the survivor’, a name he would use for his next band, Survivor.
Survivor began their career playing in Chicago bars and pizzerias from 1978 to 1980. With the money they made, they recorded their first studio album, ‘Survivor’.
In 1981 they released their 2nd album, ‘Premonition‘, which began to make them a household name in the US. Only 1 year later they would receive a call from Sylvester Stallone, who loved their song ‘Poor Man’s Son‘. It changed their lifes.
Dave Bickler was the lead singer of Eye of the Tiger. When the group was formed, he and Jim Peterik shared the vocal part of the songs, but he had problems with his voice and left the band and was replaced by Jimi Jameson.
The group would suffer many ups and downs for the rest of their career, but they remain one of the most loved bands by all, thanks to Rocky 🥊

LYRICS SURVIVOR | EYE OF THE TIGER | ENGLISH
Rising up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive
So many times it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive
It’s the eye of the tiger It’s the thrill of the fight Rising up to the challenge of our rival And the last known survivor Stalks his prey in the night And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tigerFace to face, out in the heat Hanging tough, staying hungry They stack the odds ’til we take to the street For the kill with the skill to survive
It’s the eye of the tiger It’s the thrill of the fight Rising up to the challenge of our rival And the last known survivor Stalks his prey in the night And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tigerRising up straight to the top Had the guts, got the glory Went the distance, now I’m not going to stop Just a man and his will to survive
It’s the eye of the tiger It’s the thrill of the fight Rising up to the challenge of our rival And the last known survivor Stalks his prey in the night And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger The eye of the tiger The eye of the tiger The eye of the tiger The eye of the tiger
LYRICS SURVIVOR | EYE OF THE TIGER | SPANISH
Levantándose, de vuelta en la calle
Cumplí mi tiempo, me arriesgué

Technical Note | Survivor Eye of the Tiger
‘Eye of the Tiger’ is an eighties rock song based on only 5 instruments: vocals, electric guitar, bass, drums and keyboard.
The distinctive feature that makes it so special is its riff, one of the most famous in rock history, which is based simply on 2 chords, C and A.
Asked about the secret of success, the composer, Jim Peterik, said:
Riff Rocky
I guess if you want to analyze it, it would be an unbelievable, powerful beat which is so simple and primal. It’s two and four, that’s it. Then you have the term ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ and the tiger imagery. It’s a great image, it’s a ferocious image. Then you have the very simple melody – the chorus is like three or four notes. I guess simplicity with a message people can relate to.
