Who is Simon Webbe?

Simon Solomon Webbe was born in 1979 in Manchester (United Kingdom). He was a, let’s say, mischievous kid 😈

He trained to be a soccer player and was really good indeed, but an injury cut short his career.
He made a U-turn and began to audition in music castings until 2000 when he was selected to form a band called Blue, one of the most important boybands ever.

Blue disbanded in 2004, after 3 albums and 15 million records sold. That would kick off Simon Webbe’s solo career.

Simon has released 3 albums until 2021: Sanctuary (2005), Grace (2006) and Smile (2017).

He has interspersed his records with some movie roles (The Truth about Love and Rolling with The Nines) and performances in musicals (Sister Act and The 3 Little Pigs 🐷).

‘Lay Your Hands‘ was the first song Simon Webbe wrote. Even though a lot of people see it as a love song, it’s not, it’s about friendship passion. He wrote to remember a friend who committed suicide.

That tune left the door of his feelings ajar, but it was with his second single ‘No Worries‘, Simon Webbe’s most successful song so far, that he kicked the door off the hinges. Both songs are included in his 1st album ‘Sanctuary‘, released in 2005.
In 2006 he would publish the one that we consider his best album, ‘Grace‘. It came with our Trembol, ‘Coming Around Again‘ (all details below in the post).

In 2011 Blue meets again and takes part in Eurovision Song Contest with ‘I Can ’, finishing 11th.
They would release 2 more albums until 2015, devoting more time to their solo careers since then.

Simon Webbe has confessed he suffers from depression. It is something that runs in his family, his mother suffered from it too and his brother, with mental health issues, committed suicide in 2018.

When you are going through something like that, you must seek help from other people, and in Simon’s case, also through music.

That is why his songs makes a positive impact, something that he wants to feel himself and convey with his music. Of course, ‘Coming Around Again‘ hits the bullseye.

To tell you the truth, I was not a fan of Blue. I knew them because they were always on the radio and due to their wonderful version of ‘Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word‘ featuring Elton John. I also did not know that Simon was a member of Blue, but I had always had this song stored in that folder of tracks that make me feel good, and I wanted to share it with you, with the hope that it also makes you smile 😃

‘Coming Around Again’ is a reminder of the highlights in your life, basically ‘the good old days’. It was the football season when I wrote the song, so I had the World Cup in mind. The feeling and atmosphere at the time sparked the idea for the song. It’s an uplifting track that generates positive feeling.

Did you know...?

When Simon was 19 years old, he won a modelling competition and was chosen to work on a campaign for a sportswear firm. His face ended up plastered over every bus stop in his hometown, Manchester.

Simon Webbe goes by the nickname ‘Shaft‘. That was something that the other boys from Blue came up with because he always wanted to wear the leather outfits and the long jackets.
They were like “bloody hell, Shaft!“. The nickname just stuck! Simon explained.

I’d love to go and train in a kickboxing camp in Thailand. I’m a massive martial arts fan. As a kid I used to pretend I was Bruce Lee. It’d be amazing to go and learn more. It’s my ambition.
