Trembol | Story behind Tiny Dancer by Elton John
The track is over 6 minutes long ⏳ and the radio wouldn’t play more than 3, so it was cut, spoiling the magic of the whole composition. Luckily people started to listen to it in its full version on the album. From there its popularity grew to become the song that would catapult Elton John to the top of the music scene.
Tiny Dancer is a masterpiece, a song whose lyrics and music are so well done that although the climax, that is, the chorus, doesn’t come until after 3 minutes, it keeps you listening with all your senses.
Do you know who the author of Tiny Dancer is? Yes, Elton John sings it and put it to music, but the author of the lyrics is Bernie Taupin, Elton’s inseparable companion, who has written dozens of his songs. He is responsible for mythical phrases that capture the spirit of the Californian girls in the 70s:
- 👖 Blue jean baby
- 🏴☠️ Pretty eyed, pirate smile
- 😙 The words she knows, the tune she hums
Do you know why is it called Tiny Dancer? It’s just a poetic license Bernie granted himself, instead of using ‘little’ or ‘small’, the word ‘tiny’ sounded better to him.
Bernie Taupin explained about Tiny Dancer
L.A. girls were just so different from what I’d been used to in England.
They had this thing about embroidering your clothes. They wanted to sew patches on your jeans. They mothered you and slept with you. It was the perfect Oedipal complex.

Who is the girl that inspired Tiny Dancer?
Bernie Taupin, Maxine Phyllis and Elton John (Facebook Image)
Maxine was a seamstress for Elton John’s band during their U.S. tour in the early 1970s. She worked a lot, but when they had the chance, they would spent some time together at the beach, going for a walk along Sunset Boulevard…
Tiny Dancer describe all those times together. Check it out:
- 🥻 L.A. lady, seamstress for the band.
- 👗 Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand.
- ⛪ Jesus freaks out on the street, handing tickets out for God, turning back she just laughs, the boulevard is not that bad.
Bernie and Maxine divorced in 1976. Of course he wrote another song for Elton John about it, ‘I feel like a bullet (in the gun of Robert Ford)‘.

Blue jean baby
L.A. lady
Seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile
You’ll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she’s in me, always with me
Tiny dancer in my hand
Jesus freaks
Out in the streets
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad
Piano man he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows
The tune she hums
Oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly slowly…
Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day todayHold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today
Blue jean baby
L.A. lady
Seamstress for the band

- The structure of the song features a piano melody during the first verses, accompanied by a very soft percussion and a curious instrument that give the song a Country feeling, a pedal steel guitar, in which the strings of the electric guitar are played with a bar.
- In the bridge a choir turns up, which gives Tiny Dancer a gospel touch. So happens at the end with the beautiful string section.
- Vulnerable, imperfect, bewitching. These are some of the adjectives that come to mind when listening to the music of Tiny Dancer.
