Trembol | What makes Jax Jones & Ina Wroldsen’s Breathe so special?
Jax Jones is infamous for his excellent collaborations, his beats that fill the best clubs and his colorful and poppy trademark artwork 🎊
Ina Wroldsen is a voice born to sound over dance tunes, giving them light and depth 💡
‘Breathe’ is a catchy tune, which elevated Jax Jones in 2017 to the top of the electronical music scene. He is still staning his ground there 🔝
The combination of these elements is what makes this song so special. That, and all the well-thought hooks (little details that stick in your head):
- The “Dum-dum-da-da-da-da-da-da-da, dum-dum-da-da-da-da-da-da” that repeats throughout the song.
- The choked scream effect that plays in the background at the end of each chorus line. It’s something like “waahhhh!”. Very typical of another great DJ, Timbaland.
- The drop to a higher pitch of the singer (Ina) at the end of the cut.
You can listen to these 3 hooks in our You Can’t Miss section.
Breathe is definitely different from the typical electronic beat. A song with a lot of class.
Jax Jones tells us the story behind Breathe
- Ina Wroldsen is a great songwriter, so when Jax Jones was approached to do a track with her, he was a bit overwhelmed.
- Due to their respective tours, they only had 1 day to be together and shape the song.
- That day came. Jax recounted that at first anything he played sounded like crap to Ina.
- Suddenly she started talking about how she had met her husband and that inspired Jax to play a very simple bass line that went “dum da da da, dum da da da“, sound familiar, right? 😉

- Over that bass, Ina started humming sounds and they ended up with the main melody and almost the final chorus.
- That would have been enough for any dance track, but Jax likes songs to tell complete stories, so he agreed with Ina that the song needed completion.
- They each went on with their commitments and a few days later Ina sent Jax a recording with the verses.
- Jax liked it a lot but decided to change some terms like “I’m a zombie” that didn’t suit him.
- Jax asked several musician friends, including Martin Solveig, for help to add more hooks to the song.
- It took him almost 7 months to finish the track – of course, there’s the result!!! a blast! 🤩
- At the end of the process Jax Jones stated:
I’m so gassed to release ‘Breathe’, working with Ina fulfils a dream. Not only is she an incredible vocalist but she’s one of the best & most successful songwriters in the game today.
When we were in the studio together, I couldn’t imagine anyone else in the world who could deliver the emotion her voice adds to the track. I hope everyone loves it as much as I do.

What ya, what ya gonna do?
You’re my discretional sin
I feel you on me when I touch my skin
You got me hooked and you’re reelin’ me in
When I look in your eyes, I’m on the edge
You’re on my mind like a song that I can’t escape
I don’t know how many da-da-dums I can take
I need to know if you’re feeling, feeling the same
Is it too late?
But now it’s hard to breathe
I’m not in love, it’s just a game we do
I tell myself I’m not that into you
But I don’t wanna sleep, it’s quarter after threeYou’re in my head like
Dum-dum-da-da-da-dum, dum-dum-da-da-da
Dum-dum-da-da-da-dum, dum-dum-da-da-daYou’re in my head like
Dum-dum-da-da-da-dum, dum-dum-da-da-da
Dum-dum-da-da-da-dum, dum-dum-da-da-da
You’re my obsession, my truth
I come alive whenever I’m with you
And now I dialed your number again
And you come over and over, and then
You’re on my mind like a song that I can’t escape
I don’t know how many da-da-dums I can take
I need to know if you’re feeling, feeling the same
Is it too late?
But now it’s hard to breathe
I’m not in love, it’s just a game we do
I tell myself I’m not that into you
But I don’t wanna sleep, it’s quarter after threeAnd now it’s hard to breathe
I’m not in love, it’s just a thing we make
We’re skin on skin, I need this spell to break
But I don’t wanna go and I know that you knowYou’re in my head like
Dum-dum-da-da-da-dum, dum-dum-da-da-da
Dum-dum-da-da-da-dum, dum-dum-da-da-daYou’re in my head like
Dum-dum-da-da-da-dum, dum-dum-da-da-da
Dum-dum-da-da-da
And now it’s hard to breathe (thing we make)
Breathe (into you)
Breathe (thing we make)
Breathe
And now it’s hard to breathe (thing we make)

Dum-dum-da-da-da-da
Dum-dum-da-da-da-da, dum-dum
¿Qué, qué vas a hacer?
Me tienes enganchada y me enrollas
No sé cuántos da-da-dums podré soportar
Y ahora he vuelto a marcar tu número
No sé cuántos da-da-dums podré soportar

Jax Jones songwriting tips
- 📝 The basis for any DJ is to understand that despite being electronic music, lyrics are as important as music.
- 🎼 Knowing how to play an instrument is basic to be able to complement the melodies that come up in your head. Jax plays piano, guitar, bass and drums.
- 💽 A song must be general enough for everybody to find themselves reflected in it. At the same time, it must incorporate specific elements to make it make it feel closer to the listener (It’s quarter after three). This philosophy is subscribed to by another great songwriter, Taylor Swift.
- 🤪 There might be lines that don’t make any sense, but sound good – never mind, use them! (You are my discretional sin).
- ⚓ Add hooks that sound good in any language (Dum-dum-da-da-da-da-da-dum) because everyone can sing them.
- 🤝 Collaborate with other people at production stage. This way you avoid isolation and introduce fresh ideas from other professionals.
