The Carpenters Close to You story behind

The Carpenters (They Long to Be) Close to You | Less is more

the carpenters close to you

It sounds simple, but it is not. It sounds simple, but it is not. We would think it was fortuitous, but it was not. ‘(They Long to Be) Close to You’ by American duo The Carpenters has it all, which is why after more than 50 years, it still makes your hair stand on end as soon as it starts playing.

Trembol | Story Behind Close To You by The Carpenters

You know that feeling when you haven’t listened to a song you love for a long time, the melody suddenly comes to your head and you have to listen to it running, going crazy for it again. Well, that’s what happens to me with this ballad, a beautiful song that triumphed because of its simple and subtle voice and arrangements.

‘(They Long to Be) Close to You’ is a song recorded by the American duo The Carpenters for their second studio album, ‘Close to You’ in 1970.

The Carpenters consisted of two brothers Karen and Richard Carpenter. They were leaders in sales in the so-called soft rock, nothing more and nothing less than 12 Top 10 singles, which led them to sell more than 150 million records being one of the most important groups of all time.

During their fourteen-year career (1969-1983), The Carpenters recorded eleven albums, thirty-one singles, five television specials, toured the United States, Japan, Australia, and several European countries, and even had a television series called ‘Make Your Own Kind of Music‘.

Contrary to what it might seem, ‘Close to You’ is not an original song by The Carpenter. It was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and offered to singer Herb Alpert in 1968. Alpert recorded the song, but didn’t like it and didn’t release it. After The Carpenters scored their first hit with ‘Ticket to Ride’ in 1969, Alpert convinced them to record his version of the song, believing it was right for them.

  • The song was very good, but it lacked one thing, something Karen and Richard Carpenter gave it, perfect vocals and arrangements.

Karen’s voice is one of those that is beautiful to the breath and Richard Carpenter had a gift for arranging. You know that a song is nothing without a good arrangement, it can be the best melody and voice in the world, but a bad arrangement spoils it.

The Carpenters recorded ‘Close to you’ with the instrumental backing of Los Angeles studio musicians ‘The Wrecking Crew’, and it became an absolute hit.

  • It topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts for four weeks.
  • It reached the top of the Canadian and Australian charts, and number six on both the UK and Irish charts.

More than 50 years have passed since that wonderful moment when someone turned on the radio in 1970 and heard ‘Close to You’ for the first time, but every time anyone turns on the radio, puts on iTunes, Spotify or YouTube and Karen Carpenter’s voice comes on, “Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near? Just like me, they long to be close to you”, you still feel exactly the same emotion, and there are songs that are timeless.

You can’t miss⭐️ The best parts of Close To You

1.- The first chords and the entrance of Karen’s voice. The song needs no more.

2.- Rising in tone before the last chorus in which a beautiful chorus accompanies Karen.

3.- The final part is a great, most of all when the whole band starts singing: “Wah! Close to you”.

english lyrics

THE CARPENTERS | (THEY LONG TO BE) CLOSE TO YOU | LYRICS

Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

On the day that you were born the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

On the day that you were born the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

Wa, close to you
Wa, close to you
Ha, close to you
La, close to you

THE CARPENTERS | (THEY LONG TO BE) CLOSE TO YOU | LYRICS IN SPANISH

Did you know...?

The Carpenters’ career ended abruptly in 1983, when Karen died of heart failure due to anorexia.

Much more | First versions of Close To You

The song was first recorded by Richard Chamberlain and released as a single in 1963 under the title “(They Long to Be) Close to You”.

  • Richard had a lot of success with his single ‘Blue Guitar’, but ‘Close to You’ was not. A pity, because Richard sings it beautifully.

Technical Note | What secret instrument is used in ‘Close to You’?’

The instrument that sounds like a trumpet without being a trumpet in ‘Close to you’ is the flugelhorn, also known as bugelhorn, flügelhorn or saxhorn. It is a brass instrument invented in the 19th century by adding pistons to the clarion.

The magic of ‘Close to You’ lies in the small details:

  • It uses only a piano with a faint vibraphone behind it.
  • It has only two main chords, C major and C add9.
  • The lyrics are romantic and sweet, even with a childlike tone.
  • Richard Carpenter gives it a jaunty swing feel.
  • The Carpenters’ version brings out the beauty of the melody and the light but lovely sentiment of the lyrics.
  • The end of the song is a stroke of genius with those “Waaaaaah, close to you”.

If there’s one thing that stands out above all else, it’s Karen Carpenter’s intimate vocals. Her vocal performance is so good that it sounds like we have her singing it right next to us 👂
