Ad Astra is the ninth studio album by Italian music group Il Volo. Released as part of the trio’s 15th anniversary celebrations, it is Il Volo’s first album composed exclusively of unreleased songs (except for a Queen cover).

After 15 years of career, hundreds of concerts and more than 20 million records sold, Il Volo decided it was time to create their own material. AD ASTRA is the title of IL VOLO’s new album, composed entirely of original songs.

  • From there arises this sonic journey composed of 11 tracks with an international flavor.

The band said of their new album:

It is a unique recording project of its kind, born from an intense collaborative work with an exceptional team composed of some of the most important authors and producers of the moment. The new songs bridge the past and the present, with a decisive impulse towards the future: ‘Ad Astra’ is a true cosmic experience without limits, combining intimate atmospheres and celestial suggestions, as the world’s most famous Italian trio unites their musical talent to the grandeur of space and time.

The album’s metaphysical concept challenges the limits of the visible and projects listeners into the deep mysteries of the universe, through difficulties in reaching for the stars, Per Aspera… Ad Astra, inviting them to explore the unknown with the power of music.

Ad Astra maintains the unmistakable essence of the trio while exploring new frontiers, representing a musical dimension that combines intimate atmospheres with celestial inspirations.

The album is full of wonderful compositions that make their incredible vocals stand out. Highlights include:

  • Capolavoro (Masterpiece)
  • Opera

After achieving extraordinary success with their world tour in 2024 and continuing in 2025, Il Volo would release a new version of the album entitled ‘Ad Astra (International Edition)’, including five new songs: Capolavoro (English version), Now We Are Free (from Gladiator), The Sound of Silence, Hallelujah and Amazing Grace.

Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble, with their incredible voices, have captivated audiences on every continent, becoming one of the most important names in classic crossover pop.

We return to the Festival di Sanremo to celebrate with the public a very important milestone for us: 15 years of career, friendship and passion for music. We do it by bringing to the Ariston stage an emotional pop song that comes from two years of work together with an exceptional team of authors and producers.

From this exchange, ‘Capolavoro’ was born, a song that highlights how fundamental it is to work on oneself, but also the importance of connections and feelings. Its strength lies in the fact that anyone who listens to it immediately understands who to dedicate it to.

Who are Il Volo? | Brief biography

Il Volo are Piero Barone (1993), Ignazio Boschetto (1994) and Gianluca Ginoble (1995). This trio of Italians debuted as individual soloists in 2009 in an Italian musical contest known as ‘Ti lascio una canzone’.

  • The famous manager, Michele Torpedine, who also manages the careers of Andrea Bocelli or Zucchero, heard them and was sure they would be an international success.
  • They are the first Italian artists in history to sign a contract with one of the most important American record labels on the world scene, Geffen Records.

Their eponymous debut album, Il Volo (2010) went Platinum and entered the U.S. Top 10. Their holiday album, Special Christmas Edition (2010) would go on to sell over 1 million copies, leaving Il Volo that year on their first international tour.

In 2012 they released their second album, We Are Love, full of magnificent duets with Placido Domingo and Eros Ramazzotti, among others.

  • Buon Natale – The Christmas Albums their third studio album released in 2013 worldwide.
  • In 2014 they receive the award for Best Artist of the Year at the Latin Billboard Awards.

In 2015 Il Volo wins the San Remo Song Festival with their biggest hit to date, the song ‘Grande Amore (Great love)‘.

  • They would publish an EP with great songs of the festival under the name ‘Sanremo Grande Amore‘.
  • Il Volo would not win Eurovision but was the most voted group by the public.

That same year Il volo releases their fourth studio album ‘L’amore si muove‘, publishing also their book ‘Un’avventura straordinaria’ and going out on a huge sold-out world tour.

In 2016 they release their own tribute to The Three Tenors, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, with ‘Notte magica‘. The album and subsequent tour would be a new Il Volo success.

In 2019 Il Volo reaches its tenth anniversary by returning to participate in Sanremo with the theme ‘Musica che resta‘, followed by the album ‘Musica’ and the compilation ‘10 Years – The Best Of‘.

Il Volo’s next project would see the light in 2021, ‘Il Volo Sings Morricone’ is a heartfelt tribute to the music of maestro Morricone.

In 2022 they would release a complete album in Spanish called ‘TRES VOCES UN ALMA’ with versions of songs like ‘La Incondicional’ or ‘Tan Enamorados’.

All this effort and long career would lead to Il Volo’s most special album, released in 2024, ‘Ad Astra’.
