Trembol | Story behind Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion’s The Prayer

The Prayer was written by composer David Foster and lyricist Carole Bayer Sager, together with fellow songwriters Alberto Testa and Tony Renis ✍🏽

Despite what you may think, the song was not planned as a duet. In fact, it was written for the soundtrack of a cartoon movie called The Magic Sword – Quest for Camelot.

  • In the film, the mother of the main character (Kayley) sings this prayer to protect her daughter as she rides on a quest to find Excalibur, the magic sword.

The song was recorded in the late 1990s in two solo versions, by Celine Dion in English and by Andrea Bocelli in Italian. Later, in 1999, they thought the track would sound well in two languages, so Andrea and Celine joined forces to release The Prayer as a duet. It was published in their albums: These Are Special Times by Celine Dion and Sogno by Andrea Bocelli.

  • The Prayer won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song and was also nominated for an Oscar.

Its huge popularity started when they sang it together in a concert in Italy, although the most famous performance is the one you watched before, in Central Park (New York).

Their show at the Grammy Awards is also legendary.

The Prayer meaning

The song, as its name suggests, is a prayer, a request for peace and guidance. As it happens in the film, its music should serve as a guide, so that those who are not with us anymore can help us from wherever they are.

As the tune says at the end:

Need to find a place, guide us with your grace, give us faith so we’ll be safe

David and Carole, composers of The Prayer, recounted:

David Foster

Creo que The Prayer encarna todo lo que he buscado durante toda mi vida, guía.

Carole Bayer Sager

It’s a song that I just never get tired of playing … it means a lot of different things to a lot of people. So it’s a powerful piece of music that will undoubtedly outlive me.

David Foster

I think it embodies everything I looked for my whole life, guide.

Carole Bayer Sager

Englihs lyrics

I pray you’ll be our eyes,
And watch us where we go
And help us to be wise,
In times when we don’t know

Let this be our prayer,
When we lose our way
Lead us to a place,
Guide us with your grace
To a place where we’ll be safe

La luce che tu dai (The light that you give)
I pray we’ll find your light
Nel cuore resterà (In my heart it will remain)
And hold it in our hearts
A ricordarci che (To remind us that)
When stars go out each night
L’eterna stella sei (You are the eternal star)

Nella mia preghiera (In my prayers)
Let this be our prayer
Quanta fede c’è (How much faith there is)
When shadows fill our day

Lead us to a place
Guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe

Sognamo un mondo senza più violenza (We dream of a world with no more violence)
Un mondo di giustizia e di speranza (A world of justice and hope)
Ognuno dia la mano al suo vicino (Everyone lends a hand to their neighbour)
Simbolo di pace e di fraternità (A symbol of peace and fraternity)

La forza che ci dai (The strength you give us)
We ask that life be kind
È il desiderio che (And the desire that)
And watch us from above
Ognuno trovi amor (Everyone will find love)
We hope each soul will find
Intorno e dentro a sè (Around and inside themselves)
Another soul to love

Let this be our prayer
Let this be our prayer
Just like every child
Just like every child
Need to find a place,
Guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe

E la fede che (And the faith that)
Hai acceso in noi (You have ignited within us)
Sento che ci salverá (I feel that it will save all of us)

Hai acceso in noi (Has encendido dentro de nosotros)

Technical Note | Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion The Prayer

  • The song is in the key of F major

How does The Prayer manage to excite so much?

Here’s a little technical analysis that will give you some clues as to how The Prayer achieves that level of emotional tension:

  • 🎼 Celine Dion starts singing mezzo-forte (medium-strong), giving a dark but full-bodied feeling. In the first lines Celine controls the dynamic (speed) masterfully.
  • 🎶 Andrea Bocelli, who is a great tenor, uses a baritone sound at the beginning, placing his voice at his mid-range.
  • 👩🏻‍🤝‍👨🏽 The combination of their voices before the chorus is wonderful. Celine is controlling her power giving different qualities to her voice, from nasal to frontal. She really masters vocal technique.
  • 🗣️ On his side, Andrea goes to a high tone leaving Celine the low end of the harmony. Their voices blend perfectly.
  • 🤗 In the last part Andrea opens his voice to give it more resonance, Celine amps up the volume giving us a hint of her amazing vocal power and natural color. A perfect meld of pop and opera styles.

The magic of the song lies in a perfect melody and lyrics with a sublime performance by Andrea and Celine ❤️
