Trembol | Story behind El Patio by Pablo López

Pablo López began to be known thanks to his participation in a Spanish television musical contest in 2008. After the program, he set up a bar with his brother, ‘El 47 (The 47)‘.

  • It was always full, they had a great time 🍻, but it became a catastrophe, they accumulated debt and had to close, which made Pablo realize that he had to turn to music.

Thus he released 2 albums, ‘Once historias y un piano (Eleven stories and a piano)‘, in 2013, and ‘El mundo y los amantes inocentes (The world and innocent lovers)‘, in 2015, increasing his popularity with each one of them.

This brings us to 2017. Despite the musical success Pablo did not dare to accept certain things about himself, he felt a little lost, and reflected all those feelings in ‘Camino, Fuego y Libertad (Road, Fire and Freedom)’, his most intimate album that he would present withEl Patio‘, a mystical song that no one could expect and that would catapult him to stardom.

The thing is that Pablo was in Los Angeles, on a break from recording his new album. He had not planned to make the song, but while he was in a legendary recording studio, USA East West Studios, he was inspired, or as he explains, “he was hit by a ghost that was around“, which prompted him to compose ‘El Patio‘.

Just a few days before he had seen a WHO (World Health Organization) photograph of girls in a bathtub in Syria laughing against the backdrop of the city destroyed by war. That image representing the greatness of a child who can enjoy a happy moment, despite the fact that behind it there is war or destruction, evoked him to himself, and how he did not want to extinguish the child in him by his own internal wars.

The child will teach us more than we will teach the child.

With that concept as a starting point, he began to compose. In a subconscious way, he was trying to free himself from something or someone that he had stuck to him and from which he wanted to free himself. That’s why he repeats several times to fear “vete (go away)“, because fear paralyzes and makes you a worse person.

The tune was therapeutic for Pablo and so it is for the millions of us who love this track.

El Patio has been a scream, I needed to let go of something I had inside, I needed to free myself from many ghosts that I myself produced… It freed me a lot and it is true that it is becoming a kind of exorcism every time I sing it, because it moves me a lot, I even have to be careful with it, because I almost see it as a person.

Meaninf of El Patio‘ by Pablo López

What does El patio mean?
what is pablo lópez's patio talking about?

Pablo López (Facebook Images)

Pablo says that he is still not clear about what the song means at all, and reinforces this argument by saying that his friend Alejandro Sanz also does not fully understand some of his own songs until a few years later 🤪.

Pablo claims that the patio he sings about is his own, but each person has his own patio, and therefore gives a different approach to the song, something that Pablo Lopez loves:

Many people interpret it as a child who suffered abuse, others as a person with Alzheimer’s, there are those who say it talks about loneliness, depression or anxiety, some of missing childhood or fear of maturing.

What is clear is that after El Patio, Pablo freed himself and began to really enjoy his music, letting his child self be happy singing and playing, without any inner hindrance.

Regardless of the meaning, the important thing is the emotion you feel when you listen to it, which makes El Patio a work of art and the best recent song in Spanish music.

By the way, I don’t know if you have noticed, at the end of the video of El Patio, there is a message talking about that child we were that the song alludes to all the time: “was left playing alone on the last day of freedom we knew. That day we were not afraid. That day is still waiting for us intact“.

You can’t miss ⭐️ Best parts of El Patio

1. The beginning is amazing, a chorus, a scream and the first chords of the piano saying: “¡Fuera, vete de mi casa! (Get out of my house!)“.

2. The rhythm goes down, but not the emotion, rising again in the chorus… “no soy más que un niño con los pies descalzos (I am but a child with bare feet)“.

3. In the bridge there is a whiplash of piano, accompanied by drums and chorus… much more emotion.

4. The second verse is a work of art. When he sings “solo queda tu delirio (only your delirium is left)“, something breaks inside. Outstanding!

LYRICS IN SPANISH

PABLO LÓPEZ | EL PATIO | LYRICS IN SPANISH

Fuera, vete de mi casa
Tú no eres mi amiga
Que yo sigo jugando, ¿qué más da?
Sigo jugando solo, me aburro

El patio está vació
Y suenan las sirenas
Y yo sigo jugando, ¿qué más da?
Sigo jugando y siempre me castigas

Y solo quiero que te vayas
Solo quiero que se acabe
Solo quiero que me dejes solo

Fuera, vete de mi casa
Suéltame las manos
No soy más que un niño
con los pies descalzos

Y yo sigo jugando, ¿qué más da?
Sigo jugando solo

Nada, ya no queda nada
Solo tu delirio
Tu ruido insoportable en el salón
No queda nada más que tu fantasma

Y solo quiero que te vayas
Solo quiero que se acabe
Solo quiero que me dejes solo

Fuera, vete de mi casa
Suéltame las manos
No soy más que un niño
con los pies descalzos

Y yo sigo jugando, ¿qué más da?
Sigo jugando solo
Yo sigo jugando, ¿qué más da?
Sigo jugando solo
Solo

Siempre, siempre me castigas
Siempre, siempre me castigas

Englihs lyrics

PABLO LÓPEZ | EL PATIO | LYRICS IN ENGLISH

Get out, get out of my house
You’re not my friend
I’m still playing, what’s the difference?
I’m still playing alone, I’m bored

The playground is empty
And the sirens are wailing
And I keep on playing, what’s the difference?
I keep playing and you always punish me

And I just want you to go away
I just want it to be over
I just want you to leave me alone

Get out, get out of my house
Let go of my hands
I’m just a child
with bare feet

And I’m still playing, what’s the difference?
I’m still playing alone

Nothing, there’s nothing left
Only your delirium
Your unbearable noise in the living room
There’s nothing left but your ghost

And I just want you to go away
I just want it to be over
I just want you to leave me alone

Get out, get out of my house
Let go of my hands
I’m just a child
with bare feet

And I’m still playing, what’s the difference?
I’m still playing alone
I’m still playing, what’s the difference?
I’m still playing alone
Only

You always, always punish me
You always, always punish me

✔️ Pablo López used a curious structure in the composition of El Patio, mixing parts of the verse and the pre-chorus into the chorus itself, which gives the song a brutal cohesion.
