From Frankie Valli or The Walker Brothers to Cher or Bruce Springsteen, ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’ has been a hit for almost every artist who has performed it, but do you know who wrote it? who first sang it? and who took it to No.1? This is the story of a wonderful song.

Trembol | Story behind The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore

Have you heard of a songwriting couple called Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio? They became very popular in the 60’s and 70’s for writing most of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons hits, such as: Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You or Sherry.

Well, the 2 Bobs (Crewe and Gaudio) are the authors of ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’. Both had a very particular love-hate relationship.

  • The first, Bob Gaudio, was a member of the Four Seasons, specifically the keyboard player. He was also the producer of most of the band’s music and co-owner of the group’s rights, along with singer Frankie Valli. His most popular composition is ‘December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)‘.
  • The second, Bob Crewe, was a singer and songwriter. In 1961 he released 2 solo albums and became a teenage sex symbol for his adonis-like appearance. Bob was homosexual, although he remained very discreet because the time was not conducive to it. That would be a great burden during his life, leading him to take refuge in drugs for a while. Bob Crewe was a great talent who would compose, among many other great songs, the mythical ‘Lady Marmalade, together with Patti LaBelle.

Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio met in the early 60s when The Four Seasons had not had any hit. They began working together on a song Gaudio had written called ‘Sherry‘, which would become the first Top 1 in a long line.

Their relationship as songwriters had many highs, but also some lows. Bob Gaudio actively contributed to “Jersey Boys“, the theatre play and film that tells the story of The Four Seasons. Bob Crewe was portrayed as an eccentric and corny homosexual in Jersey Boys, which was far from the truth, in fact it was just the opposite, Crewe felt very bad about his sexual condition and hid it. Crewe considered the film a kind of revenge from Bob Gaudio towards him. Despite this, for the most part their relationship, as well as being fruitful, was a good one.

In addition to composing for Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Crewe and Gaudio also composed for other artists such as the single ‘Silence Is Golden’ by The Tremeloes, ‘The Proud One‘ by The Osmonds, or ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’, which is usually attributed to the British group The Walker Brother.

Crewe and Gaudio wrote ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’ for The Righteous Brothers, but when Frankie Valli heard it, he liked it so much that he asked them to lend it to him. Frankie recorded it with The Four Seasons, although he would finally release it as a solo artist in 1965, meaning that the first release of ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’ is by Frankie Valli alone.

  • It only reached number 128 on the Billboard, many say it’s because the record company didn’t promote it as they didn’t want it to become a hit and therfore have Frankie leaving The Four Seasons.

The fact is that a few months later, the British group The Walker Brother decided to record the song with a slightly faster rhythm, becoming the biggest hit of his career, number 1 in the UK and Top 10 in many countries.

  • It is currently among the top 500 songs in history.

Many years later, in 1996, Cher released her version of ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’ to public and critical acclaim. In 2004, the British band Keane did the same. Others such as Bruce Springsteen and even Spanish star, David Bisbal, with a fantastic Spanish version, have also recorded the song, making this fantastic tune still relevant 60 years later.

Like all great songs, many artists have decided to incorporate it into their discography. These are in our opinion the best interpretations, tell us in the Comments which one is your favourite!

  1. David Bisbal: I put it first for many reasons. First, this is one of the few versions in Spanish and David has a beautiful voice, second and foremost although I had heard the song as a child, I didn’t even know who sang it. After listening to Bisbal’s version, I fell in love with ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore‘ again, which led me to know its history and to my second favourite version…
  2. Frankie Valli: The fact that it’s the original version has a lot of merit, but if we add the most famous falsetto in history, it makes this version of Valli’s the best in English for us.
  3. The Walker Brothers: I must confess that I don’t particularly like this version, but I know it’s almost everyone’s favourite. It’s also their most emblematic song being The Walker Brothers the first band to popularised the song. It deserves to be in the Top 3.

There are other versions that are among the best too:

  • Cher: Listening to ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’ in Cher’s voice is a pleasure. The song writer, Bob Gaudio, said that “there’s something about Cher that touches the heart. It goes to the pit of your stomach”.
  • Russell Hitchcock (from Air Supply): A fantastic version, even better than the original by Frankie Valli.
  • Nielsen/Pearson: I was pleasantly surprised by this version by Reed Nielsen and Mike Pearson.

The list goes on and on, in case you’re curious, here are the rest of the artists who have covered ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’: Russell Hitchcock, Keane, Peter Hofmann, Doug Parkinson, Top 6, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Bruce Springsteen, Chilly, Jules Shear, Jay & the Americans, The Ormsby Brothers, Neil Diamond, the Ides of March, The Fuzzy Bunnies and The Lettermen.

The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore (Original Lyrics)

Loneliness is the cloak you wear
A deep shade of blue is always there

The sun ain’t gonna shine anymore
The moon ain’t gonna rise in the sky
The tears are always clouding your eyes
When you’re without love, baby

Emptiness is the place you’re in
There’s nothing to lose but no more to win

The sun ain’t gonna shine anymore
The moon ain’t gonna rise in the sky
The tears are always clouding your eyes
When you’re without love

Lonely, without you, baby
Girl, I need you
I can’t go on

The sun ain’t gonna shine anymore (The sun ain’t gonna shine anymore)
The moon ain’t gonna rise in the sky (The moon ain’t gonna rise in the sky)
The tears are always clouding your eyes (The tears are always clouding your eyes)
Sun ain’t gonna shine anymore
When you’re without love, baby

The sun ain’t gonna shine anymore

No puedo seguir

El sol no va a brillar más (El sol no va a brillar más)
La luna no va a salir en el cielo (La luna no va a salir en el cielo)
Las lágrimas siempre nublan tus ojos (Las lágrimas siempre nublan tus ojos)
El sol ya no va a brillar
Cuando estás sin amor, nena

El sol no va a brillar más
El sol no va a brillar más
El sol no va a brillar más
El sol no va a brillar más
El sol no va a brillar más

Did you know...?

In the UK it is considered a death song because of an incident in the 1970s involving legendary London gangster Ronnie Kray. It seems that Ronnie went into a pub armed to kill rival gangster George Cornell.

Guess what song was playing on the jukebox at the time? That’s right, ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’.

It turns out that a stray bullet hit the jukebox, leaving it scratched, repeating over and over again the line “The sun ain’t gonna shine, anymore, anymore, anymore, anymore...” as gangster Cornell lay dying.

The Four Seasons’ record sales are estimated to have ranged from 100 million to 199 million.

Although Bob Crewe did not like the way he was portrayed in the film ‘Jersey Boys’, he received a lot of money for the rights to use his image, which helped him set up the Bob Crewe Foundation in 2009, a non-profit organisation run by his brother, Dan Crewe, which helps fund the LGBTQ arts and communities.

Technical Note about The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore

🎶 Although the intro of the song is very simple, the moment the drums come in, everything changes, becoming a pop song that explodes with the well-known production technique called “Wall of Sound popularised by Phil Spector at the time. It is the use of a lot of reverb and several musical layers to create a very dense sound.

🎶 The track is essentially sad, as it talks about being abandoned by your partner, yet it sounds dreamy and inviting.

🎶 The climax is brought about by the vocals, whether it’s Frankie, Springsteen or The Walker Brothers, the colour that the singer imbues the track with is what makes us definitely come out of the sadness and think of ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’ as a song of hope towards love.

🎼 The song is written in the key of D Major at 111 bpm.
