I was 16 years old and spending the summer at my parents’ house in the mountains, I turned on the radio and the first 2 sentences of ‘Love is all around‘ came on:
I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes.
Which means that you feel love all over your body. Just what happened to me when I saw Tania, a beautiful girl, who was just my friend, much to my regret 💘 I listened to the song 1000 times thinking about her.
The thing is that what I felt when I listened to the song, happened to half the world when the track was released in 1994 to promote a Hugh Grant movie called ‘4 Weddings and a Funeral‘.
‘Love is all around‘ was at number 1 in the UK charts for 15 weeks in a row. The record was held by Bryan Adams with 16 weeks thanks to his ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It for You‘.
When everyone thought Wet Wet Wet would beat it, the band’s singer, Marti Pellow, prevented it from selling more, so that week 16 Whigfield’s ‘Saturday Night‘ was No. 1 and ‘Love is all around’ No. 2. But why?
It turns out that it was played so often on the radio for months that people got fed up with it, they found it tiresome, so the vocalist asked the label to stop selling it.
Not only that, but they wanted to release their album ‘Picture This‘ and showcase more songs. Although the underlying reality is that Wet Wet Wet went from being a quartet of friends who did everything equally, to a band behind singer Marti Pellow, on whom all the spotlight was focused, because of his famous smile and good voice.
This caused a deep wound 🤕 that in the future would kill the band (you can read the complete Wet Wet Wet story here).
Likewise, ‘Love is All Around‘ continued to have good sales and is currently at position 12 of best-selling singles in UK history. By the way, the tune is not original from Wet Wet Wet, as we tell you below.

I still think it’s a brilliant record. Its strength is its sheer simplicity. Any band would give their eye teeth to have a hit record like that. I’m very proud of it.

Who is the original composer of ‘Love is all around’?
‘Love is all around‘ is an original song by a British band called The Troggs. Released in 1967, it reached number 5 on the Billboard UK Hot 100 chart, remaining for up to 16 weeks on the charts.
It was composed by its vocalist, Reg Presley, inspired by a Joy Strings song called “Love That’s All Around“, which was playing on day on TV 📺. Reg explained:
I remember I’d come back from the States, it was a Sunday, and from the kitchen came the aroma of a tasty lunch-we’d spent months just eating hamburgers-I kissed my wife, hugged my son. We ate together, and went into the living room to watch TV, and there were The Joystrings pounding drums, kneeling and shouting love phrases. Their music caught my attention right away…. From that experience I decided to write this ballad”
Why did Wet Wet Wet decide to do a cover version of ‘Love is all around’?
It was the director of ‘4 Weddings and a Funeral‘, Richard Curtis, who as a fan of the band contacted Wet Wet Wet asking them to do a cover of one of these 3 songs: “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, “Can’t Smile Without You” by Barry Manilow or “Love is All Around” by The Troggs.
Wet Wet Wet chose the last one because it was the closest to their style 😎

Author Reg Presley commented:
I love their version. When I heard it, I thought it was great. They sent me a tape to tell them what I thought. I put my cup of tea in my mouth, took a sip, and then those big chords came on (ours were more delicate) and I spit my tea all over the room. And, all of a sudden, he started singing and I thought ‘wow!’.

- The Troggs’ original song is in the key of D major, which has historically been called the key of glory by classical composers.
- It was underpinned by a string quartet and a ‘tick tock’ sound on percussion.
