MAMMOTH WVH Mammoth II | Van Halen’s son releases his 2nd major rock album played entirely by himself
Can you imagine how difficult it is to compose all the songs on an album, music and lyrics? Of course it’s complicated, but many artists do it, what none of them do is sing and play all the instruments on their album. Mammoth WVH has done it again on his 2nd album, ‘Mammoth II’. Undoubtedly, a new Rock reference.
What does Mammoth WVH mean?
The man behind Mammoth WVH is Wolfgang Van Halen (hence the initials WVH). He is the son of the legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen.
Wolfgang wanted to pay tribute to his father with his band, so he called it “Mammoth”, just like his father’s first band.
The name Mammoth is really special to me. Not only was it the name of Van Halen before it became Van Halen, but my father was also the lead singer.
Ever since my dad told me this, I always thought that when I grew up, I’d call my own band Mammoth, because I loved the name so much. I’m so thankful that my father was able to listen to and enjoy the music I made.
Nothing made me happier than seeing how proud he was that I was continuing the family legacy.
Mammoth WVH | Brief bio
Mammoth WVH is the artistic representation of Wolfgang William Van Halen.
- Born in California on 16 March 1991, he is known for being the son of Eddie Van Halen, in whose band, ‘Van Halen‘ would play bass guitar from the age of 15, something he would also do in the heavy metal band Tremonti from 2013 to 2016.
Wolfgang was clear that he wanted to create his own music and started writing a solo album. When he had it ready, he decided to delay its release to be with his father, who was getting worse from throat cancer.
It wasn’t until 2020 that the first Mammoth WVH album would be released, presented with a wonderful song called ‘Distance‘ in which he pays tribute to his father, who would die that same year at 65:
As my pop continued to struggle with various health issues, I was imagining what my life would be like without him and how terribly I’d miss him. While the song is incredibly personal, I think anyone can relate to the idea of having a profound loss in their life.
I never intended ‘Distance’ to be the very first piece of music people would hear from me, but I also thought my father would be here to celebrate its release. This is for him. I love and miss you, Pop.
- All profits from ‘Distance’ were donated to Eddie Van Halen’s favourite charity, ‘Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation‘.
On the eponymous debut album, ‘Mammoth WVH‘, Wolfgang would play all the instruments, inspired by what Dave Grohl would also do on the first Foo Fighters album. He took it as a challenge, which he overcame by composing a high quality rock album with its own identity. No reminiscence of Van Halen.
With that first album behind him and critical acclaim, Wolfgang would repeat the formula by writing and playing all the songs and instruments on Mammoth WVH’s second album, ‘Mammoth II‘, released in 2023.
Mammoth WVH Mammoth II |A great rock album
Wolfgang Van Halen’s talent is undeniable, not only because of his incredible ability to sing, play bass, guitar, drums and keyboards, but because on ‘Mammoth II’ he has composed 10 songs that range from Hard Rock to more melodic, mainstream Rock.
Mammoth WVH recorded the album to be listened to on vinyl, a format he loves and collects. The tracks would be divided into 5 on each side.
Mammoth II cover
- Right?: Mammoth WVH’s favourite song, it is a true declaration of his principles as a composer and what he loves most about music. Heavy, but melodic at the same time.
- Like a Pastime
- Another Celebration at the End of the World: The first and most acclaimed single from ‘Mammoth II’ will become a benchmark for the band’s future.
- Miles Above Me: With a guitar solo that is a real showpiece, the track takes us on a fantastic melodic journey.
- Take a Bow
- Optimist: Wrapped in an atypical time signature (7/4), the track shows the influence of one of Van Halen’s favourite bands called ‘Tool’.
- I’m Alright: Our Emotion of the Week 😊
- Erase Me
- Waiting
- Better Than You:Una letra sarcástica y un ritmo pesado despiden Mammoth II. Wolfgang said: “It’s one of my favourites. Better Than You’ is more of a general analysis of where we are and how I guess social media has affected the way we perceive each other. It’s my analysis of how everyone thinks they’re better than everyone else and we all suck at it”.
I think it’s really funny that the lyrics are quite rabid, but presented through the lens of a kind of comfortable rock song. If ever there was an anthem for me about standing up for what I think I should do – as opposed to what people expect – this is definitely that song.
Mammoth WVH (about ‘I’m Alright’)
The best song on Mammoth WVH’s new album is ‘I’m Alright’. Upbeat, energetic, catchy, ‘I’m Alright’ represents a personal vision of how Mammoth WVH perceives the things that are happening to him, how people are urging him to be like his father, Eddie Van Halen, while he wants to go his own way.
A real highlight that continues to build on the promising career of Mammoth WVH, who are already opening for Metallica and have an extensive tour ahead of them.

For those of you who like stories told in multiple music videos, like the one we told about Madonna, you’re going to love this one.
The video for ‘I’m Alright’ continues the story that Mammoth WVH started in 2021 with their track ‘Don’t Back Down’, the plot would continue with ‘Another Celebration at the End of the World’ and go on in this clip where you see the fictional band created by the “ex-members” of Mammoth WVH, Mammoth WWW, sabotaging the audition of their “ex-mates” by stealing a song and preventing them from arriving on time to the Battle of the Bands.
Mammoth WVH 'Mammoth II' Lyrics
You wanna know how, I’ve got the know-how
That kind of thinking is all around
Just take it slow now, but don’t get bogged down
Or you’ll end up in the ground
I’m gettin’ over you
I hope you feel it too
I’m gettin’ over you
I know you feel it too
They try to own ya and fill the quota
Don’t need your help, yeah, I’m quite alright
You’ve gotta walk tall, your back’s against the wall
Now walk right into the light
Sorry, so sorry
It’s kind of you to say
You just made my day
Sorry, I’m so sorry
It’s kind of you to say
Fuck off and back away
And let me breathe
You think it’s over, they’ll take you lower
They’ll take another bite, yeah
You think you’re clever, can’t wait forever
But you ain’t got the right
I’m gettin’ over you
I hope you feel it too
I’m gettin’ over you
I know you feel it too
Sorry, so sorry
It’s kind of you to say
You just made my day
Sorry, I’m so sorry
It’s kind of you to say
Fuck off and back away
And let me breathe
You think you’re clever, I’ll make it better
Before you blink you’ll be mine, all mine
Sorry, so sorry
It’s kind of you to say
You just made my day
Sorry, I’m so sorry
It’s kind of you to say
Now fuck off and back away
And let me breathe
No necesito tu ayuda, si, estoy bien
