Pont Aeri Flying Free | Story of song, disco and all its music

pont aeri flying free

Whenever Flying Free comes on you feel an innate need to party, don’t you? It’s Pont Aeri’s most emblematic song, whose impact was unimaginable in the early 2000s. This is the story of a Spanish discotheque, a Hardcore song and a generation that still wants to party 🕺

Pont Aeri Vol. 4 Flying Free

Trembol | What makes Flying Free so exciting?

In the late 90s and early 2000s in Spain there was a style of dance and electronic music called ‘Mákina (Machine)’. Many discotheques, to which I must confess I was a regular, held sessions that lasted until dawn, where there was a bit of everything, people who went to dance and have fun, and many others who went to get high and party crazily 🥴

That era and that style of music has a unique hymn, which even today still gets me on my feet and even more so my wife. I’m talking about volume 4 of Pont Aeri, ‘Flying Free’.

It’s a song designed for partying, produced in a very clever way: It starts with a beautiful piano melody, to which a hardcore base is added. Little by little the rhythm rises until an electronic voice repeats “abracadabra”.

So far, so good, a very cool electronic music song that makes us dance. But the song would have been just another one, if it weren’t for the fact that after two and a half minutes, a mythical female voice appears and launches a biographical message referring to the discotheque for which the song was created, Pont Aeri:

Since 1992 there is a club which is making history, Seven years later in 1999 it’s still kicking. Pont Aeri!

At that time, the song resurfaces, this time as a more commercial dance track sung by a beautiful woman’s voice telling us to fly free and feel the ecstasy 🚀. By the time we realise it, we’ve been jumping, vibrating, screaming and having a great time during the almost 7 minutes that the original track lasts.

The craze around the song was huge, mostly in Spain. It then spread to many clubs in Europe and Latin America, and 20 years later, well into the 2020s, it is still being played at weddings, remember parties and in the playlists of millions of people.

Flying Free made it, it became the biggest electronic, hardcore or mákina song of all times in Spain. My wife still likes it and dances to the song like the first day. What more could you ask for? 💃

Who wrote Pont Aeri Flying Free?

The song was written by one of the deejays of the Pont Aeri club, Marc Escudero (DJ Skudero) and one of the best known figures in the late 90s of electronic music in Spain, Rubén Moreno (DJ Ruboy).

Pont Aeri Vol.4, was released as a single containing the version we all know from Flying Free and an instrumental version by DJ Skudero’s brother, Xavier Escudero (Xavi Metralla), also Deejay of Pont Aeri.

Curiously when it was released in May 1999 it didn’t do well, and it wasn’t until after the summer that the track would explode, by Christmas 1999 Flying Free was already on every music compilation on the market.

The success was so massive that the Spanish TV invited them to perform live.

The premise was to make it commercial and that was not easy, as machine music at that time was only played in specialised radio stations.

Rubén Moreno (‘Flying Free’ producer)

We were overwhelmed by the number of orders for the album. We didn’t know why it had suddenly started to be in such high demand.

Who is the singer of Pont Aeri Flying Free?

For the first time in their repertoire, the Escudero brothers, responsible for almost all the music of Pont Aeri, decided to incorporate lyrics and vocals. The chosen artist was Marian Dacal 👩‍🎤

Marian, who was born and raised in the UK, moved to Barcelona at the age of 16 to begin her musical career. She started in the dance music group ‘Scanners‘, which gave her a lot of visibility, participating in several dance tracks, until she was contacted by Pont Aeri.

Marian went to record Flying Free when she was ill, so she didn’t like the initial result. She says:

If you listen to the voice of the song, don’t you get the feeling that I have an air hostess-like tone?

Nothing could be further from the truth. Everyone considers Marian’s performance to be one of the secrets of Flying Free’s success.

Nowadays, Marian Dacal does not make a living from music. She works in a beauty clinic, but still performs whenever she gets the chance at festivals and revival concerts.

What is Pont Aeri?

Pont Aeri is a discotheque, one of the temples of electronic and hardcore music that emerged in Catalonia (Spain). It opened its doors in 1992 and closed in 2012, due to the crisis.

  • During those 10 years it was one of the most famous discotheques in Spain, opening 4 branches.

The initial venue (in Terrassa, Barcelona) had a capacity of approximately 500 people and provoked many complaints from the neighbours because of the noise and the type of audience, which in the mid-90s was typically skin heads.

The initial DJs were called Pastis & Buenri, although they were fired because the skins didn’t want them. They were replaced by the sons of the owner of Pont Aeri, Marc and Xavi Escudero (DJ Skudero & Xavi Metralla), who would become the authors of ‘Flying Free’.

The second venue meant a radical change for Pont Aeri. On the one hand, they were the forerunners of hardcore music in Spain, which meant that the venue, which opened in 2000, was packed, but on the other hand, a large part of the audience was taking drugs 💊 and when they left the venue, they got into big fights. Due to complaints from the neighbours, it was closed in 2001.

The third discotheque, had 3 rooms, one for chill-out, another for machine music with Ruben XXL, Ricardo F and Nando DixControl as regular DJs and the big room where you could listen to hardcore music by Mark Skudero, Xavi Metralla, Dj Sonic and Dj Sisu.

  • The club was open from 23:30 to 5:30 and it cost around 13€ to get in 💶

Marc Escudero commented:

By the time ‘Flying Free’ hit, we had been doing well for a decade. It was a huge leap forward, but when the success transcended to the club, everything that was behind it, the identity, the style, the work with the brand and the parties, was already very refined.

Although Pont Aeri closed its doors in 2012, the Escudero brothers, Pastis & Buenri and other DJs continue to perform under the Pont Aeri label at electronic festivals and remember parties.

  • In 2018, Pont Aeri played at the Liceu in Barcelona with an orchestra.
  • In 2019, the Barcelona Remember Festival was created with more than 30 artists and where ‘Flying Free’ always plays.

Did you know?

The part of ‘Flying Free’ when it says ‘Abracadabra‘ is a sample of the 1992 Leika K. song ‘Open Sesame’.

‘Pont Aeri Vol. 4, Flying Free’ sold more than 100,000 copies and was the first hardcore track to reach number 1 on several radio charts.

Due to the huge success of ‘Flying Free’ a band called ‘Pont Aeri’ was created, consisting of a singer and two dancers.

From 2000 to 2002 they performed all over Spain with crowds of more than 20,000 people, as well as in television shows.

Pont Aeri discography | 10 Volumes

Pont Aeri’s discography began in 1996 with the first short album 💿, which at the time was called a ‘maxi single’. Its title was ‘Pont Aeri. Vol. 1’ and included 3 tracks recorded by Pont Aeri’s resident djs at the time. It was quite successful so the second volume was soon released.

The first of the albums produced by DJ Skudero & Xavi Metralla came out in 1998, ‘Pont Aeri Vol. 3’, with considerable sales.

For the fourth volume, they wanted to reach a more massive audience and for the tracks to be played on the radio, so they thought of leaving the ‘Mákina’ sound a bit behind, to do something more commercial. In this way, together with Dj Ruboy, with the voice of Marian Dacal and the lyrics of Skudero and Xavi Metralla, telling what Pont Aeri meant to them, ‘Flying Free’ was published under the title “Skudero & Xavi Metralla-Pont Aeri vol. 4“.

Thanks to this success, year after year, a new volume of Pont Aeri continued to be released until the last one, volume 10, was published in 2016.
