Who is Teddy Swims? | Brief bio

Jaten Collin Dimsdale, stage name Teddy Swims, was born in the United States in 1992. At home as a child, soul music was always playing while watching soccer games, which Teddy did in high school, until his coach suggested he try a musical theater class. That changed his path and Swims began performing in musicals and learning piano and ukulele, while learning vocal technique from YouTube videos.

As a young man he would be part of several bands, both rock, hardcore, and soul, getting in 2019 to open for Tyler Carter with a friend. Since then he changed his name to ‘Teddy Swims’.

  • Teddy refers to Teddy Bear ‘Teddy Bear’ in allusion to his size.
  • Swims is an acronym that reflects the idea of integrating different parts of his personality:

STOP the spill; WARN nearby personnel; ISOLATE the spill; MINIMIZE exposure; SECURE the area.

Since 2019 he started posting versions on YouTube. The most successful being Shania Twain’s ‘You’re Still the One’ which already accumulates 150M views.

His first single of his own was ‘Night Off’, followed by ‘Picky’ and ‘Broke’ in 2020, but the track that started making him known was ‘My Bad’ which earned him the title of Rolling Stone’s “artist you need to know”.

  • Teddy Swims’ first EP, ‘Unlearning’ was released in 2021. The second would come the following year under the title ‘Tough Love’, appearing on various TV shows in the United States.

That would be the year of collaborations for Teddy, Meghan Trainor, Mitchell Tenpenny, Illenium, MK and BURNS or TELYKAST, were some of the names he would work with.

In 2022 he released his third EP ‘Sleep is Exhausting’, with which he broke into the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with his most successful single to date, ‘Lose Control, an emotional anthem about losing yourself and losing control that has surpassed one billion streams across all platforms.

This track would also introduce Teddy Swims’ first album, ‘I’ve Tried Everything but Therapy (Part 1)’, released in 2023.

  • The album reflects Swims’ efforts to reach a more mentally healthy place with his life, which is why he titled it that way, as a promise to himself that he would start going to therapy.
  • The album reached the top 10 in Norway, Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Canada, France, Lithuania, Sweden, Scotland, UK and USA.

This whole album is just me being honest.

You know, I’ve been touring, writing, and continuing to work on myself over the past 8 months and wanted to share something like a real-life check-in. These songs represent where I’m at and I didn’t want to wait till I had the whole part 2 done — so here you go.

Some Things I’ll Never Know |Story behind Teddy Swims best song

As he himself has confessed ‘Some Things I’ll Never Know‘ is his favorite song on the album, something we agree with 100%, that’s why it’s the Thrill of the Week.

When he set out to record “I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1)”, he had already written or co-written more than 400 songs, but this particular song, ‘Some Things I’ll Never Know’, with its key lines: “When did your heart let me go/Guess some things I’ll never know“, sets the tone for the whole album.

Teddy explained the meaning of ‘Some Things I’ll Never Know’ in this way:

It took me so long to record it because I was just crying and crying as I was doing it. I felt like it really healed me, and it’s a song about not getting closure. And you don’t get closure from people when they leave your life a lot of times. I think to some degree, closure is something that doesn’t exist, with relationships ending and you don’t know why people do the things they do and why people hurt you and it’s not about you when they hurt you, either.

That’s really, I guess, what I’ve always been having a hard time with was closure in past relationships and relationships I’m currently in. So I think once that song came in, I was certain that I wanted to talk about that and I wanted to discuss that as much as possible and make this album about healing and about asking for help and knowing that I’m not crazy for feeling the way I’m feeling. It’s OK to feel this way. So I think that song informed everything I wanted to say, and everything else just started falling into place right behind it.

By the way, Teddy Swims released a version of ‘Some Things I’ll Never Know’ along with the fantastic voice of Maren Morris, which gives it a new touch of tenderness making it even more touching.

Maren Morris commented on the collaboration:

Teddy’s vulnerability on this song really struck a chord, so turning it into a duet felt incredibly healing for me.

‘Some Things I’ll Never Know’ is a classic soul song with a modern sound that will go down as one of your favorites 😊

Teddy Swims 'Some Things I'll Never Know' lyrics

Walking down the street last night
Watching strangers pass me by
Where do all our shadows go?
I guess some things I’ll never know

I can fool my senses for a little while
But some things are too hard to reconcile

When I look into your eyes
There’s no answers I can’t find
It’s a feeling that I’ve never known
When I’m wide awake tonight
Running circles in my mind
There’s an answer I can’t find
When did your heart let me go?
I guess some things I’ll never know
I guess some things I’ll never know

I’m running out of avenues
‘Cause every road leads back to you
When memories fade, where do they go?
I guess some things I’ll never know

I can fool my senses for a little while
But some things are too hard to reconcile

Oh, when I look into your eyes
There’s no answers I can’t find
It’s a feeling that I’ve never known
When I’m wide awake tonight
Running circles in my mind
There’s an answer I can’t find
When did your heart let me go?
I guess some things I’ll never know
I guess some things I’ll never know

Did I turn over every stone?
Am I still there when your eyes close?
When did your heart let me go?
I guess some things I’ll never know

Teddy Swims 'Some Things I'll Never Know' lyrics in Spanish

Caminando por la calle anoche
Viendo a extraños pasar a mi lado

¿Cuándo me dejó ir tu corazón?

¿Cuándo me dejó ir tu corazón?
Supongo que algunas cosas que nunca sabré
Supongo que hay cosas que nunca sabré

¿Revolví cada piedra?
¿Sigo ahí cuando tus ojos se cierran?
¿Cuándo me dejó ir tu corazón?
Supongo que algunas cosas que nunca sabré
