Cat Burns new album

CAT BURNS Early Twenties | Debut album by the UK’s best-selling female artist in 2022

Cat Burns’ career has exploded in the last year and a half becoming the best-selling British female artist thanks to her viral hit ‘Go’. Now she presents her debut album ‘Early Twenties’, a superb album.

Who is Cat Burns?

Cat Burns is a 22-year-old singer and songwriter born in London. Her parents emigrated from Liberia during the First Liberian Civil War, although her father abandoned the family, Cat grew up with her mother and sister.

  • Burns’ mother is a gospel singer so that music deeply influenced Cat.

In 2016, when Burns turned 16, with the help of a classmate from the school she attended, BRIT School, which had a small music studio, she recorded an EP called ‘Adolescent’ which she self-released. She would likewise do the same with the second, ‘Naïve‘, released in 2019.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 lock-in, Cat began sharing covers and the occasional original song on TikTok 📱 Her track ‘Go’ went viral, which would see her sign her first record deal with RCA Records.

Cat initially had a hard time reconciling being gay with her ethnic background. In her 2022 track ‘Free‘ she explains her coming out experience to her family.

Burns would go on to release singles landing in 2022 with a new short album called ‘emotionally unavailable‘, which was very well received, prompting Cat and the label to think it was time to prepare his first full-length album.

Cat, who suffers from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), far from being daunted by it, uses it to compose.

Both the chords and words come at the same time, but the concept comes first and I’ve found that that system has always worked for me! Helps the process of writing the song become a lot quicker which is great for my ADHD brain!

In 2023 Burns would also be diagnosed with autism, but this didn’t stop her either and she continued to release incredible singles with millions of streams until 2014 when she released her long-awaited debut album, ‘Early Twenties’.

I try to sum up the last 4 years of my life up to this moment. In 2019 i was so close to giving up. i felt like every door was shut firmly and had no way of being opened, i almost accepted that no one wanted to hear a black girl from the uk play guitar n sing pop songs, i was ready to just find a job w more security. until my sister simply said ‘yeah no, sorry this is what you’re meant to do’.

Fast forward to lockdown, i decided to post videos of me singing online because why not? had nothing to lose, then those videos started doing alright and i was like oop what is happening pls.

From then until now there have been some incredible highs and some immensely low lows, got to experience love like no other & grief like no other, but that’s just a part of life, it means i’ve lived. and this album showcases just that. i wanna say thank you to every writer & every producer on this project, thank you for making it such a safe space for me to be vulnerable and for your many pep talks!

Early Twenties |Cat Burns’ colossal first album

Cat Burns’ life has completely turned around in the last 18 months thanks to TikTok and her song ‘Go’ which led her to be the best-selling British female artist in 2022.

  • Unsurprisingly ‘Go’ is off her debut album ‘Early Twenties’, a superb album.

Cat Burns is not only an amazing vocal talent, but also an incredibly talented songwriter who offers sharp observations on life and love with a fresh perspective in her music.

‘Early Twenties’, in its Deluxe version, is divided into 2 discs where Cat gives us a total of 25 songs. The most outstanding ones that you have to listen to are:

  • alone: The chorus that accompanies Cat singing that she doesn’t want to be alone forever will get into your bones.
  • go: The song that made her known to the general public is a half-time song in which Cat tells her partner that she has had enough, that she is not going to take it anymore. It’s time to pack up and leave.
  • end game: 3 out of 3, the first three songs of ‘Early Twenties’ are perfect to get to know this artist who draws on gospel influences, pop inspirations and also her love for indie and guitar music.
  • people pleaser: With a spectacular gospel sound in the choruses Cat confesses that she doesn’t know how to confront people, feeling good about making others feel good.
  • met someone: Simple and sincere ‘met someone’ tells us about that process of falling in love with a person when you weren’t looking for it.
  • you don’t love me anymore: Guitar licks, warm vocals, backing vocals, this is a great song in which Burns tells his partner that he would have preferred her to give him a reason before leaving her.
  • happier without you: Trembol’s Emotion of the Week poses the situation where you don’t know if you’d be happier without the person you’re with now. ‘happier without you’ is subtle, it flows like water… it’s so hard to make a song this beautiful that we can only take our hats off to the great Cat Burns.
  • know that you’re not alone: Overcoming depression, anxiety, overwhelm, discomfort, knowing that we are not alone and that together we can handle it all. A magnificent half time.

On the second side of the album the enjoyment continues with songs like: ghosting, sleet at night or Wasted Youth.

  • The album is accompanied by a 12-minute short filmm that reflects the concerns that many people of Cat’s generation suffer.

Early Twenties explores coming of age from a very personal and vulnerable perspective, which makes you identify with the album right away. Maybe Cat is going through the common struggles of getting older, but if it makes her write songs like these, we hope it lasts a little longer 😉

Cat Burns 'happier without you' Lyrics

Sitting on the sofa with the TV low
Made a list of things to collect my thoughts
‘Cause I always forget myself
When I see your face, I lose my place
You only see to care how it affects you
Then don’t even notice it’s affecting me
Ignoring my wants and my needs, you don’t even see I’m hurting

I don’t know what I’m feeling right now
I’m almost scared to say this out loud

What if loving you’s unhealthy?
Would I feel good being away from you?
What I’m saying’s kinda crazy
But what if I can make me happier without you?
Should we maybe do our own thing?
Are we staying where we’re not supposed to?
Scared it’s gonna make you hate me
But what if I can make me happier without you?

It really doesn’t mean that I don’t love you
I’m sorry it if feels kind of out of the blue
But there have been so many times where I’ve really tried to talk to you
I think it might be over, guess it’s me who has to call it
Don’t wanna break, ’cause you’re not ready to change yet
I know you sense it, ’cause I’ve been acting distant
I need some space

The only way to leave no room for doubt (room for doubt)
Is if I finally say this out loud

What if loving you’s unhealthy?
Would I feel good being away from you?
What I’m saying’s kinda crazy
But what if I can make me happier without you?
Should we maybe do our own thing?
Are we staying where we’re not supposed to?
Scared it’s gonna make you hate me
But what if I can make me happier without you?

Ooh-ooh, happier without you
Ooh-ooh, happier without you
Ooh-ooh, happier without you
Ooh-ooh, happier without you

Maybe loving you’s unhealthy
‘Cause I feel good being away from you
What I’m saying’s not that crazy
‘Cause lately I’ve been happy, happier without you
Think I’m gonna do my own thing
We’ve been staying when we’re not supposed to
I’m sure that this’ll make you hate me
But I know I can make me happier without you
