Chappell Roan’s performance at the Lollapalooza music festival is said to have broken the record for the most crowded set in the festival’s history. Where does the name Chappell Roan come from?
Chappell doesn’t like his real name, Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, so in 2016 when he was just starting to be known he decided to change it to Chappell Roan.
- She chose the name as a tribute to her grandfather who passed away that year, whose last name was Chappell. The last name, ‘Roan‘, is a word from his favorite song, ‘The Strawberry Roan’ by Curley Fletcher.

Who is Chappell Roan?
Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, known professionally as Chappell Roan, was born in 1998 in the United States. She lived with her 4 siblings and her parents in a trailer park. At the age of 12 she started piano lessons and at 15 she was opening her YouTube channel.
When she turned 17 she uploaded her first original song to that channel, ‘Die Young‘, shortly after which she would be signed to Atlantic Records. Her first EP was released in 2017 under the name ‘School Nights‘.
3 years later, in 2020 her label would fire them, but she kept on releasing songs independently, which would lead her to a new label getting interested in her, Island Records.
- With them she would release in 2023 her debut album, ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’.
- It was not an immediate commercial success but it began to accumulate addicts little by little, which is not surprising if we consider the great songs included such as: Kaleidoscope or Red Wine Supernova.
Chappell would open for Olivia Rodrigo and perform at several festivals making her popularity take off, something that her last single, “Good Luck, Babe!”, would confirm.

Roan, who since moving to live alone in New York in 2018 felt for the first time able to live openly as a gay woman, released the single ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ in April 2024, a track that talks about the absurd obligatory nature of being heterosexual.
In the song Roan describes a woman who tries to deny her feelings for Chappell herself and for women in general.
‘Good Luck, Babe!’ has performed like a shot:
- It entered Spotify’s Top 10 and the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100.
- It is the fastest song to reach 100 million streams on the platform.
- It served as a catalyst to propel Chappell’s debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, which would reach No. 2 in the United States.
Roan recently premiered an unreleased track titled ‘Subway‘ during a performance as she works on her new album.
Following her performance at Lollapalooza in August 2024, she achieved the biggest daytime performance and largest crowd ever seen at the festival, making the 26-year-old the new American star of the moment.
Roan who was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder when she was 22, says that after discussing it with her therapist she decided to adopt the “tacky pop star” look she wears and which her fans already idolize.
