LEON BRIDGES Leon | Back to our root

‘Leon’ is soulful music infused with the soul of its author, Leon Bridges, who has set out to share with us stories about his home, about nostalgia, about his place of origin, with the aim of bringing us back to our roots, as he himself has done in these 13 wonderful soulful tracks.

Who is Leon Bridges?

Todd Michael “Leon” Bridges was born in 1989 in Atlanta, USA.

Bridges learned to play guitar with simple chords to accompany his lyrics. While working at a coffee shop he played open mic sessions in Fort Worth, Texas where he lived.

Ten years ago I started my journey in the South Fort Worth area playing at The Grotto, Magnolia Motor Lounge and the Boiled Owl while trying to make my way as a local musician.

It was his song ‘Lisa Sawyer’, about his mother, that helped him find his ’50s and ’60s soul style.

Bridges worked on his early tracks with Jenkins and Block of the group White Denim as producers. They recorded an album with an old outfit releasing two songs on SoundCloud , which attracted the attention of Columbia Records with whom, at 25, he would sign his first record deal, releasing his debut album a year later.

  • ‘Coming Home ‘ reached number six on the Billboard 200, being nominated for Best R&B Album at the Grammy Awards.
  • His song, ‘River’ has been his biggest hit to date, which contributed to its use in the series ‘Big Little Lies’. as that of our beloved Michael Kiwanuka.

His second and third albums, Good Thing (2018) and Gold-Diggers Sound (2021) also garnered Grammy nominations for Best R&B Album.

This project was a 4-year long journey through my childhood memories and all the things that I hold dear in this life – my roots, my upbringing, family, simple times and hard times, and everything about Texas that makes home so special to me. This album is a product of nostalgia and the people who have shaped my life.

I’ve poured my heart into every track, reflecting on the little moments that hold so much meaning – late night drives with friends, sun-soaked days in DFW, and the warmth of community. Each song is a tribute to the experiences and connections that define who I am, and I hope that you hear this collection of stories and connect with your own roots.

Leon | The new album by Leon Bridges

Leon is the fourth studio album by American singer Leon Bridges, and by far his most personal album. In it he lets us into his soul, hoping that just as it has happened to Leon, the songs will bring us back to our roots.

The entire album focuses on his childhood and growing up in Fort Worth, Texas. Bridges began writing some pieces during his previous album ‘Gold-Diggers Sound’ back in 2021, but they didn’t fit with that album, so he continued to mature them and join others to form his best work to date, ‘Leon’:

  1. When a man cries: An acknowledgement of male vulnerability.
  2. That’s what I love: A soul ballad full of tenderness where Bridges tells of the things that warm his heart, a tribute to the warmth of family, the charm of Texas and the nostalgia that unites us all.
  3. Laredo: “Laredo” is more than a song, it’s a journey to the roots, a return to what really matters. After years of searching the world for inspiration, Leon was drawn to the memories of the border city with his own, which shaped him. It is a tribute to those moments when life slows down and all that matters is being here, in the now.
  4. Panther City: Fragments of Leon’s childhood pepper this fantastic song that takes us back to hot days and console afternoons. By the way, ‘Panther City’ is the nickname for the city where Leon grew up, Fort Worth.
  5. Ain’t got nothing on you: A song that captures the essence of unconditional love.
  6. Simplify
  7. Teddy’s tune
  8. Never satisfied
  9. Peaceful place: A statement of the things Bridges loves most in the world.
  10. Can’t have it all
  11. Ivy
  12. Ghetto honeybee: The most sensual track on ‘Leon’, and yet the lyrics are so poetically written, they sound more romantic than lewd.
  13. God loves everyone

‘Leon’ is a majestic combination of soul, country and folk, in what Bridges has decided to call “his gumbo”, a simmering blend of southern sounds, using music as a way to connect his past with his present.

With these 13 wonderful tracks Leon Bridges tells his stories with a perfectly organic blend of genres. ‘Leon ‘ is his soulful, powerful and very personal work that takes us into the heart of Texas, introducing us to it’s people, it’s places and it’s music.

Lyrics | LEON BRIDGES Laredo

I was running outta time
Inspiration hard to find across the Rio Grande
Take me to your city lights
Out by the riverside
I know you understand

Play me something downtempo
Low-key and rocksteady
Body hittin’ like Kimbo
Fallin’ for you like confetti
More whiskey and ginger
Love, I’m a just a beginner
What if I stayed in Laredo?
For just one more night
For just one more night

I knew a girl with a diamond crown
Grew up in a border town
Took me to an empty dive
Such a pretty silhouette
Show me how to two-step
She brings me back to life

Play me something downtempo
Low-key and rocksteady
Body hittin’ like Kimbo
Fallin’ for you like confetti
More whiskey and ginger
Love, I’m a just a beginner
What if I stayed in Laredo?
For just one more night
For just one more night

Oh, ooh
Nah, nah, nah, nah
Oh, yeah
Yeah

Play me something downtempo
Low-key and rocksteady
Body hittin’ like Kimbo
Fallin’ for you like confetti (Fallin’ for you)
More whiskey and ginger (Fallin’)
Love, I’m a just a beginner
What if I stayed in Laredo?
For just one more night
For just one more night

Play me something downtempo
Low-key and rocksteady

Discreto y rockero
Que golpee el cuerpo como el Kimbo
Cayendo sobre ti como confetti
Más whisky y jengibre
Amor, soy sólo un principiante
¿Y si me quedo en Laredo?
Sólo una noche más
Sólo una noche más

Oh, ooh
Nah, nah, nah, nah
Oh, yeah
Yeah

Tócame algo downtempo
Discreto y rockero
Que golpee el cuerpo como el Kimbo
Cayendo sobre ti como confetti
Más whisky y jengibre
Amor, soy sólo un principiante
¿Y si me quedo en Laredo?
Sólo una noche más
Sólo una noche más
Tócame algo downtempo
Discreto y rockero
