Los Angeles-based Israeli singer-songwriter Mergui has released his second EP ‘Shadows of Blue’ with 5 tracks sampling some great classics, guess which?
Who is Mergui?
Yehonatan Ya’akov, from whose English name Jonathan Mergui takes his stage name, ‘Mergui’, was born in Israel in 2000.
He started at the age of 13, writing and producing music for fun in his bedroom. One of the first tracks he covered was ‘How Far I’ll Go‘ from the Disney movie Moana.
In 2017 her father took the recording and sent her to an Israeli talent show called ‘The Next Star’, where she would end up reaching second place.
In 2019 she released her first EP in Hebrew ‘Ma Iyea‘, followed in 2021 by ‘Lo lihiyot levad‘.
He then decided to move to Los Angeles looking to internationalize his music. There he would release his first English EP in 2022, ‘Dark Side of The Rainbow‘.
- From there we jump to 2024 when Mergui releases his last EP ‘Shadows of Blue‘.

Shadows Of Blue | Mergui’s new EP
Mergui has a spectacular voice that in a very clever way has joined 5 romantic songs that use samples, that is to say, pieces of well known songs, which makes the songs sound familiar and new at the same time.
‘Shadows of Blue’ sounds like it would be sung by a boyband, you know, a band of heartthrob boys. But no, it’s Mergui himself who fills the EP with a very mellow pop and blues, in the purest American crooner style.
- The title of the EP came from a conversation with his father. Mergui wanted to call the record ‘Blue (Triste)’, but his father told him one day that there is no shadow without light, which inspired him to call it ‘Shadows of Blue‘.
‘Shadows of Blue’ is for me the realization that there is no shadow without light, and these blue shadows in my life would not exist without the light on the other side, like the things I am grateful for and the amazing people around me.

Mergui said that when he started writing this song he thought he was only going to talk about his career, but it turned out to be much more than that:
It’s about life in general… all the ups and downs and how I’ve learned to deal with them.

Megui explained about ‘Cry’:
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on my childhood and how I grew up. Thanks to my parents, who created a safe environment for us, I could be whoever I wanted to be, no matter what that looked like. From playing soccer to dancing ballet, these experiences gave me the confidence to pursue my passions without fear of judgment. Later on, I realized how much these moments shaped me into who I am today and I couldn’t be more grateful for it.
“Cry” is a reflection of these experiences—the journey of breaking down walls and embracing vulnerability. This song is more than just music; it’s an invitation.
When Mergui wrote to Elton John to ask permission to use a snippet of ‘Yellow Brick Road’, he thought he would never hear back, but to his surprise, the British pop icon wrote back that he loved his version and invited him to his Elton John AIDS Foundation benefit gala 💊
