rhodes un-finished review

RHODES Un-finished | An amazing collection of songs that revolve around himself

Acclaimed British singer-songwriter Rhodes has returned just 1 year after his spectacular second album ‘Friends Like These‘, and does so with a new self-reflective, honest and deeply vulnerable work, ‘Un-finished‘.

2 albums in 2 years

The 2023 release of ‘Friends Like These‘ was the closing of a chapter for Rhodes, but at the same time it represented the beginning of a new one.

On ‘Friends Like These‘ he unraveled many personal cobwebs, something that led him to understand his demons and fight against them in search of hope and happiness, something that on ‘Un-finished’ cries out in every song.

I started writing this album in the Summer of 2022. I was in the middle of a deeply introspective period of self-reflection and looking back a lot at my past, my childhood, and the traumas we carry through generations in our families. I’d come to a point where I started to realise that the way I saw the world was distorted, the lines had been blurred in places I didn’t expect them to be, and I was struggling to see my true reality.

I was always balancing somewhere between being alright and completely falling apart and my coping mechanisms were damaging to not only me but also to the people around me. I couldn’t accept that there was a way through anything beyond what I’d always known, and I started to unravel, unfolding all of my core beliefs with this existential feeling of ‘am I even myself?’

Rhodes Un-finished | Album review

While Rhodes was recording the album he attended the exhibition of an artist named Lucien Freud. There he was drawn to a self-portrait with the title ‘un-finished‘. It was a painting that had been deliberately left unfinished to reveal the artistic method behind it.

  • Rhodes liked the idea so much that he titled the album ‘Un-finished‘, incorporating a series of illustrated portraits on each single and on the album cover 🖼️

The whole album revolves around the idea of unraveling and rebuilding ourselves, trying to stitch up old wounds in the process and coming to terms with the idea that we will probably always be working on it.

In that way Rhodes composed 11 tracks that should be listened to as one:

1. How I love you: The world is a beautiful place but it is also full of pain and when times get tough, it is important to know that you have someone there who will always be by your side, loving you fully.

2. Happy: A song about trying to find happiness in every moment and in the little things.

3. Sunlight: A song that touches the heart with beautiful lyrics: “You gave me sunlight, the light of my life, somebody to hold, somebody to know“.

4. Toothpaste: When Rhodes wrote the theme I was thinking about his youth and what got me to where he is today:

Sometimes when I look back on my early twenties, I see someone so scared and lost. Someone who was always running from something, but towards chaos and self-sabotage. The verses play into some of the experiences I had in my darkest moments and the chorus is a message to anyone who is struggling to overcome their fears that they can find the strength and that they can do it.

5. All I’ve Ever Known: The most beautiful song on the album and the Emotion of the Week, despite the harshness of the lyrics, which play with the idea that, no matter how green the grass is and how cold the snow is, love doesn’t last and the people you care about most will leave.

6. Being In The Sky: With almost all of the ‘un-finished’ tracks being very deep, Rhodes composed this interlude to let us breathe. Rhodes’ 5-year-old son upon hearing the tune told his father that it sounded like you were in heaven. Hence the name ‘Being in the sky’.

7. Be The Bird: A song about hope, a song that tries to give peace of mind to move forward and not listen to those inner voices that make you doubt.

8, Don’t cry: Another great track that leaves you in awe when you listen to it, you’ll see!

9. Here I Am: Almost as a second interlude before the end of the album Rhodes tells us that he is here, with us, opening his heart to us, always.

10. Faraway: Although it is difficult at times Rhodes confesses to his partner that he loves her and understands how hard it is for her to love him.

11. The Drive: The last song Rhodes wrote for the album. A song that concludes the road to healing.

Will there be a new Rhodes album in 1 year? We don’t know, but what is certain is that he has already won the hearts of many people and his path in music will continue to grow exponentially.

Rhodes 'All I've Ever Known' lyrics

Some things
Some things I’ve always known
Grass is green
The snow is cold
How can I keep you close
When all I’ve ever known
Is love will go?
It’s how I’ve grown

Can we stay here
And be soft like rain?
‘Cause I
I don’t wanna push you away

I’m not gonna run anymore
When I’m under the weight of it all
I just wanna stay where you are
But I’m used to things falling apart
I don’t wanna lose you like that
I don’t wanna hurt you like that
What am I gonna live for?
What and I even here for
Without you?

Some things
Some things I’ve always known
The stories told
In the rings of an oak
And a child only grows
Where the roots can take hold
As they lean in to hope
Towards light, towards home

Can we stay here
And be soft like rain?
‘Cause I
I don’t wanna push you away

I’m not gonna run anymore
When I’m under the weight of it all
I just wanna stay where you are
But I’m used to things falling apart
I don’t wanna lose you like that
I don’t wanna hurt you like that
What am I gonna live for?
What and I even here for
Without you?

Without you
Without you
Without you

‘Cause I could not sleep
For the secrets that were never mine to keep
They left me weak
Down on my knees praying, history won’t repeat
Oh, I

I’m not gonna run anymore
When I’m under the weight of it all
I just wanna stay where you are
But I’m used to things falling apart
I don’t wanna lose you like that
I don’t wanna hurt you like that
What am I gonna live for?
What am I gonna live for

Without you?

Without you
Without you
Without you
Without you

Rhodes 'All I've Ever Known' lyrics in Spanish

Algunas cosas
Algunas cosas que siempre he sabido
La hierba es verde
La nieve es fría
Cómo puedo mantenerte cerca
Cuando todo lo que siempre he sabido
¿Es que el amor se irá?
Así es como he crecido

¿Podemos quedarnos aquí
Y ser suave como la lluvia?
Porque yo
No quiero alejarte

No voy a huir más
Cuando estoy bajo el peso de todo
Sólo quiero quedarme donde estás
Pero estoy acostumbrado a que las cosas se desmoronen
No quiero perderte así
No quiero herirte así
¿Qué voy a vivir?
¿Para qué estoy aquí
Sin ti?

Algunas cosas
Algunas cosas que siempre he sabido
Las historias contadas
En los anillos de un roble
Y un niño sólo crece
Donde las raíces pueden afianzarse
Mientras se inclinan hacia la esperanza
Hacia la luz, hacia el hogar

¿Podemos quedarnos aquí
¿Y ser suaves como la lluvia?
Porque yo
No quiero alejarte

No voy a huir más
Cuando estoy bajo el peso de todo
Sólo quiero quedarme donde estás
Pero estoy acostumbrado a que las cosas se desmoronen
No quiero perderte así
No quiero herirte así
¿Qué voy a vivir?
¿Para qué estoy aquí
Sin ti

Sin ti
Sin ti
Sin ti

Porque no podía dormir
Por los secretos que nunca fueron míos
Me dejaron débil
