Bon Jovi These Days | They never sounded more real and heartfelt
Bon Jovi’s best album is named after this track, ‘These Days‘, and like the record itself, the song is somewhat obscure, in contrast to everything the band had done to that date (1995). It is considered a masterpiece by Bon Jovi fans, me included. This is the story behind an awesome song.

Trembol | Story behind These Days, Bon Jovi’s best album
First, a little confession, Bon Jovi has always been my favorite band. I loved their 80’s metal tunes, their energy and their aesthetics, I even grew my hair long trying to look like Jon, something I didn’t achieve 😅
The group’s maturity came in the 90s. The band members were all between 32 and 35 years old, got married, started having children… all that would be reflected in their compositions, especially in ‘These Days‘, which despite its harsh lyrics (more on its meaning below), conveys a lot of peace.
So much so that whenever I had an exam at university, I would always listen to These Days beforehand to calm myself down. It was like a good luck ritual.
The album was released in 1995, a couple of years after ‘Keep the Faith‘, the first album in which Bon Jovi already gave hints of the change of the band towards Pop Rock and towards more serious and careful themes.
But it was not simple, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora (the legendary guitarist) composed more than 40 songs, re-recorded the album several times, the same as they changed recording studios. Everything to create the band’s new sound.
They succeeded with These Days, a deep song in which they abandon their optimistic vision of the world and reflect on the hard decade of the 90s.
By the way, the album was highly criticized by a sector of fans, but time puts everything in its place and today, more than 30 years later, it is Bon Jovi’s best album.
Jon Bon Jovi commented on These Days
How many more alternative bands can you stand before you want to throw up?
I can’t pretend to write what I don’t write, and I’m not going to jump on the fashion boat because it would be bullshit. I’m writing things that mean something to me, and hopefully people will like them.

What is the meaning of These Days?
Very dark in its words, the song speaks of the end of innocence and the transition to adulthood. It does so by telling stories of people who want to be understood and live their dream:
- A homeless man wearing a Styrofoam crown.
- A girl who goes to the city looking for her dream.
- A young man named Jimmy Shoes, who jumps from a second story trying to fly.
This line from the chorus describes it perfectly:
There ain’t nobody left but us these days
You can’t miss ⭐️ The best of These Days
1. The story of the girl who wanted to be like James Dean
2. The story of Jimmy Shoes, the stuttering boy who wanted to fly
3. The final chorus with the unmistakable guitar of Richie Sambora

LYRICS BON JOVI | THESE DAYS | ENGLISH
I was walking around, just a face in the crowd
Trying to keep myself out of the rain
Saw a vagabond king wear a Styrofoam crown
Wondered if I might end up the same
There’s a man out on the corner
Singing old songs about change
Everybody got their cross to bare, these days
She came looking for some shelter with a suitcase full of dreams
To a motel room on the boulevard
Guess she’s trying to be James Dean
She’s seen all the disciples and all the wannabes
No one wants to be themselves these days
Still there’s nothing to hold on to but these days
These days, the stars seem out of reach
These days, there ain’t a ladder on these streets
These days, are fast, nothing lasts in this graceless age
There ain’t nobody left but us these days
Jimmy shoes busted both his legs, trying to learn to fly
From a second story window, he just jumped and closed his eyes
His momma said he was crazy, he said, momma, I’ve got to try
Don’t you know that all my heroes died
And I guess I’d rather die than fade away
These days, the stars seem out of reach
But these days, there ain’t a ladder on these streets
These days are fast, love don’t last in this graceless age
Even innocence has caught the morning train
And there ain’t nobody left but us these days
I know Rome’s still burning
Though the times have changed
This world keeps turning round and round and round and round
These days
These days, the stars seem out of reach
But these days, there ain’t a ladder on these streets
These days are fast, love don’t last in this graceless age
Even innocence has caught the midnight train
And there ain’t nobody left but us these daysThese days, the stars seem out of reach
These days, there ain’t a ladder on these streets
These days, are fast, nothing lasts
There ain’t no time to waste
There ain’t nobody left to take the blame
There ain’t nobody left but us these days
Me pregunté si yo podría acabar igual

Much more | These Days, the album
The album to which our song ‘These Days‘ gives its title is a gem, as well as a commercial success in Europe, Australia and Asia, although in the United States it was less successful.
Here is the full album on Spotify. I strongly recommend that you listen:
- Hey God
- Lie to me
- My guitar lies bleeding in my arms
- Diamond ring
As a curiosity, the image of the album cover was taken in a town in Baja California called Real de San Antonio, of which the members of Bon Jovi were captivated 🏙️
Technical Note | Bon Jovi These Days
- The song begins with a beautiful piano progression by Bon Jovi’s brilliant keyboardist David Bryan 🎹. Something as simple as C – D – E minor, sets a languid tone for what is to come.
- Later on, with certain alternative tinges, very much of the era (the 90’s), come Richie Sambora’s masterful solos 🎸
- The song is in E minor key and is played at 129 bpm (bits per minute), but above all, it’s sung from the heart ❤️, the one Jon Bon Jovi puts into it.
